Bali has become one of the world’s most sought-after tourist destinations, but there are some travel restrictions you should be aware of due to an immense influx in tourists and expats over time.

Indonesia recently reopened its airports and Visas On Arrival (VOA) are now available to eligible travellers. During this trial period, regulations may change and visa requirements could relax further.

Requirements for Entry

Before booking your holiday to Bali, be sure to familiarize yourself with its travel restrictions. This island still adheres to some health regulations and requires certain passport and visa requirements in order to enter.

To travel to Bali, you’ll need a valid passport that is at least six months old with two blank visa pages, an airline return ticket and enough funds for your stay.

In addition to your passport, you’ll require a visa issued by an Indonesian embassy. This could be either a Visa on Arrival (VoA), Visa Exemption Arrangement Facility (VEA) or Single Entry B211 Visit visa.

With a VOA, you must present your visa upon arrival at the airport. Those with VEA must apply for their visa prior to traveling. Furthermore, all fully vaccinated international travellers no longer require quarantine or a pre-arrival PCR Covid test.

Requirements for Stay

Bali is a sought-after holiday destination, boasting everything from luxury resorts to small family-run villas. For solo travellers, the island provides ample opportunities for meeting new people and making friends.

When selecting accommodation in Bali, it’s best to pick a place close to where you plan on going and avoid places that are too far away from the main attractions. Doing this will save both time and money during your stay.

Navigating the island isn’t a problem; there are plenty of taxis and transport drivers around to help you out. Some even provide tours for the day to give you an insider’s look at the island’s highlights.

Renting a scooter or motorbike in Bali is possible, though it’s best to have an international license and be familiar with the road rules. Be aware that traffic may be congested around tourist areas.

Requirements for Transportation

If you are planning a visit to Bali, it’s essential that you know the transportation requirements. From air travel to car rentals, there are various ways in which you can get around the island.

Bali boasts a more advanced transport system than many other tourist spots, offering bus services, public transport and even docars (taxis with drivers on board) to get around the island.

You can hire a motorbike or scooter to explore the island. These are popular with tourists due to their ease of use and affordability.

Be cautious: Bali can be a bustling and chaotic place. Always pay attention to the road ahead and try not to overtake other vehicles.

If you plan to rent a car in Bali, be aware of certain restrictions regarding drivers in certain areas. Kuta, Seminyak and Sanur do not permit app-driven pickups so it is necessary to consult local drivers before booking your ride.

Requirements for Food

Bali is a popular tourist destination and known for its exquisite local produce. There are numerous night markets, warungs (food stands) and fruit vendors who sell locally produced food items.

Bali’s cuisine focuses on speedy preparation and variety, with a heavy emphasis on rice. Furthermore, there are plenty of vegetarian options available as well.

Balinese cuisine is distinguished by the use of locally grown herbs and spices. Additionally, it employs the traditional pepes method of cooking – an elegant method that dates back centuries.

The island offers a great range of restaurants and cafes to suit all budgets, but it’s worth exploring the local warungs where you can get an inexpensive meal. A popular dish is nasi campur (mixed rice). This buffet-style dish offers various toppings like sauteed vegetables, fried tempe or tofu, meat, egg and curry.
